Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
In the past month there have been numerous bicyclist and pedestrian accidents in our area that have caused severe injury to the victims or even death. This is very unfortunate.
Florida has ranked in the top 3 in bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities every year since 2001. Florida is in the process of implementing a Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategic Safety Plan. The goal of this plan is to improve the overall safety of pedestrians and bicyclists by reducing pedestrian- and bicycle-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities while ensuring that all areas of Florida’s transportation system provide safe and accessible travel options for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Florida’s Pedestrian & Bicycle Focused Initiatives (FPBFI) has offered some safety tips for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as drivers. First safety tip is that everyone OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS.
Here are some other Safety Tips:
Pedestrians
- Always use the crosswalk
- Look then look again before crossing
- Be visible
Bicyclists
- Yield to Traffic when appropriate
- Be predictable
- Be visible
- Watch for Parked cars
Drivers
- Stop before making a right on red
- Share the road
